Watering Instructions for New Kentucky Bluegrass Sod

Proper watering is critical for the success of your new Kentucky bluegrass sod. Follow these guidelines to ensure strong root development and a lush, healthy lawn.

Immediately After Installation

  • Begin watering immediately after installation.

  • Water deeply enough to soak the sod and the top 3–4 inches of soil.

  • Avoid puddling—adjust sprinkler timing or flow if needed.

First Two Weeks: Establishment Phase

Goal: Keep sod and soil consistently moist—not soggy, but never dry.

Spring/Fall (Cool Weather: 50–70°F)

  • Water 2–3 times per day, 10–15 minutes each session.

  • Early morning, midday, and early evening are best.

  • Reduce frequency slightly on overcast or rainy days.

Summer (Hot Weather: 75–90+°F)

  • Water 3–4 times per day, especially during peak sun.

  • Hot weather causes quicker evaporation and stress—watch for drying at seams or corners.

  • If edges curl up, increase water immediately.

Winter (If Laying Sod in Mild Climates)

  • Water once per day (midday is best) if temperatures are above freezing.

  • Sod still needs moisture to root, but less frequent watering is needed in cold weather.

Mowing

  • Try to mow the sod after roughly 2 weeks.
